Iran ready for cooperation with Russia in combating ISIS

Russia is one of the countries dedicated to combating the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), and Iran is ready to have necessary cooperation with Russia in carrying out the operation, said spokesperson of the National Security Commission of Iran’s Parliament Wednesday in Tehran.

“Russia is one of the countries that’s really dedicated to combating the ISIS. We must stick to combating these kind of terrorists. Iran has never changed its policies on this. It is just on this common target that Iran and Russia carried out a very good cooperation. Iran has been ready to carry out various cooperation including facilities with Russia in combating the ISIS,” said Hossein Naghavi Hosseini, the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission spokesman during an interview with China Central Television (CCTV).

Russian Defense Ministry announced Tuesday that Russian Tu-22M3 long-range bombers and Su-34 frontline bomber carried out air strikes against terrorist targets in Syria from an air base in Iran for the first time.

The ministry said five large warehouses with weapons, ammunition, fuel and lubricants, three command posts and several training camps have been destroyed, and a significant number of terrorists have been killed in the campaign.

This is also the first time for Iran to allow a foreign country to use its territory for military operations after the Iranian Revolution.

The Hamadan air base, located 47 kilometers north of Hamadan, capital of Hamadan Province in west Iran, has a runway of around 4,600 kilometers, according to Iranian media.

The air base will cut half of the voyage of Russia’s Tu-22M3 long-range bomber compared with setting off from base in Russia, and will greatly increase its bomb load.

A member of the National Security Commission said, Iran’s allowing Russia to use its air base is a part of a bigger and open military cooperation plan between the two countries in combating the IS.

“This is the bigger plan and the bigger agreement based on the situation, which is not fixed in the Middle East, and especially in the Syria. Depending on the development of the situation in the Syria, so let’s say the delegation or the people in charge, they make new decision,” said Alireza Rahimi, a National Security Commission lawmaker.

The military cooperation between Iran and Russia in Syria is a beginning, and the cooperation will possibly extend to other regions including Yemen, according to another National Security Commission lawmaker Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh.

“The Iran-Russia cooperation in Syria is just the beginning of the plan, which will not only be limited to Syria. It will go to other regions, even possibly Yemen,” said Falahatpisheh.

According to the National Security Commission chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi, Iran is having intensive consultations with Turkey, hoping Turkey to join in Iran and Russia to combat the IS.

“We are negotiating with Turkey. This is a very important negotiation. We think we will achieve good results,” said Boroujerdi.
