On his arrival in Iraq on Monday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif paid tribute to holy cities of Najaf and Karbala and holy shrines of Imam Ali and Imam Hussein.
Zarif arrived in the Holy City of Najaf on Monday morning as part of a regional tour that took him to Kuwait and Qatar.
Zarif also met with four senior Shia clerics in Iraqi city of Najaf on Monday. He visited Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Saeed Hakim, Sheikh Is’hagh Fayyaz and Sheikh Bashir Najafi in Najaf.
Talking to reporters after a meeting with Grand Ayatollah Sistani, he said extremism and terrorism now pose a major threat to the whole region. He urged cooperation and coordination among all to fight the phenomenon.
The senior religious leaders expressed satisfaction over the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1.
They also underlined the expansion of bilateral and regional ties in order to combat against terrorism and extremism.
After his meetings in Najaf, Zarif departed for Baghdad to hold talks with senior Iraqi government officials.
He is due to meet with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari, President Fuad Massoum, Premier Haider al-Abadi, Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri and Head of Islamic Supreme Council Seyed Ammar al-Hakim.
Iran is ready to continue dialogue with the remaining parties to the 2015 nuclear deal, despite taking a further step in reducing its compliance to the accord on Friday....
