In 2015 there were roughly 1.8 billion Muslims in the world, roughly 24 per cent of the global population.
Christianity is currently the worlds largest religion, but a number of factors are set to see Islam take first place by 2070.
The religion is growing much faster than any other major faith, as the Pew Research Center has found.
Muslims tend to have more children than members of other religious groups. Around the world, each Muslim woman has an average of 3.1 children, compared with 2.3 for other religions combined.
In short, expect a lot of babies from them.
Islam also has the youngest worshippers - the median age was 23 in 2010.
This means a larger share of Muslims are ready to have children imminently and are likely to fuel Muslim population growth.
Attitudes to Islam vary across Europe, the same study found, with the UK among the most favourable to Muslims in their country.
By 2050 it’s predicted Muslims will make up 2.1 per cent of the United States’ population.
