A passenger plane has crashed in the vicinity of the Iranian capital’s airport, according to local media reports. Some 40 passengers aboard the flight are feared dead.
The Iran-140 Sepahan Air jetliner had barely left the airport, as it crashed shortly after take off, on the outskirts of the capital at 09:45 (0515 GMT) on Sunday, according to Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency.
Some 50 passengers and crew have been aboard the plane, according to reports.
Later reports claimed that the bodies of 10 of the dead passengers have already been extracted from the debris.
The plane was bound for Tabas in Eastern Iran when it crashed just 5km west of the Iranian capital.
According to eyewitness accounts, the plane appeared to lost control before taking off from the runway, and only lasted about several seconds in the air before diving into a crash.
