The US freestyle wrestling team landed at Shahid Ashrafi Esfahani Airport in the western Iranian city of Kermanshah on Monday afternoon and was given a warm reception upon arrival.
Hundreds of Iranian wrestling enthusiasts and correspondents have extended their friendly welcome to American wrestlers, who arrived in the country to take part in the 2017 Freestyle World Cup.
Despite a tense history between the United States and Iran, the two countries’ wrestling teams have often faced off. Their relationship on the wrestling mat was put in jeopardy after Donald Trump included Iran among banned countries in an executive order regarding immigration and refugees.
Iran, in turn, banned Americans from Iran and the event was put into jeopardy. After a judge stopped Trump’s executive order, Iran allowed the U.S. contingent to travel to Kershmanshah to compete.
The Freestyle World Cup competition is to be held in Kermanshah, Kermanshah province February 16-17.
