The celebrated Iranian vocalist Mohammad Reza Shajarian is to receive France’s most prestigious award, Chevalier des Arts et Lettres medal, for his lifetime achievements in Persian classics.

Shajarian is the second Iranian vocalist that receives the medal.
Iranˈs undisputed icon of Kurdish and Persian classical and Sufi music, Shahram Nazeri also received the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres medal in 2007.
France has honoured a number of Iranian artists, scholars and activists such as Reza Deghati (photographer), Shirin Ebadi (lawyer), Abbas Kiarostami (filmmaker) and Pari Saberi (theatre director) with France’s highest decoration the Order of Légion d’Honneur.
Mohammad-Reza Shajarian is an internationally and critically acclaimed Persian classical singer, composer and Ostad (master) of Persian music.
He has been called “Iran’s greatest living master of traditional Persian music.” Shajarian is also known for his skills in Persian calligraphy, and humanitarian activities.
