Foreign tourists visiting Tehran will soon be able to go on sightseeing tours around the capital aboard double-decker buses.
‘The city authorities are planning to start regular tourist routes run by a double-decker bus, known in the world as Hop-on Hop-off’, ISNA news agency quoted deputy at the tourism affairs office of Tehran Ali Rafee as saying.
According to Rafee, this was discussed during the tenth meeting of the commission on tourism and its development in Tehran attended by the representatives of the city administration responsible for security, law and order.
One such bus was bought by an Iranian businessman in Sweden and it is currently undergoing customs procedures.
There are also plans to hold talks with Iranian car manufacturing plants in order to build six more such buses by March next year.
The fleet of tour buses in Tehran comprise only two Mercedes-Benz O302s, which stopped production in 1976.
Tehran is one of the major tourist destinations in Iran as it is home to about two thousand historical sites.
The city is home to many historical mosques, churches, synagogues and Zoroastrian fire temples. However, modern structures, such as Azadi Tower and the Milad Tower, serve as symbols of the city.
Last year, some 1.2 million foreign tourists visited the metropolis, which marked a 12% increase compared to the previous year.
