World All-Star Team to Play Charity Football Match in Iran

A football all-star game between Iran players and an international team featuring the likes of Luis Figo and Gary Lineker is planned for late August in Tehran in the wake of the nuclear deal, according to local news reports.

The game is planned for August 28 in Tehran’s Asadi stadium.

Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos, Fabio Cannavaro, Guti, Fernando Hierro, Fernando Couto, Vitor Baia, Bodo Illgner, Clarence Seedorf, Patrick Kluivert, Steve McManaman, Fernando Morientes, Marcel Desailly, Gaizka Mendieta, Edgar Davids, Jari Litmanen, Christian Karembeu, Boudewijn Zenden, Santiago Solari and Michel Salgado are supposed to play in the match.

There is speculation that the nuclear deal reached last month and the planned lifting of sanctions will boost the popular sport in the country by allowing foreign investment.

Iran won three straight Asian Cup titles between 1968 and 1976. The national team has qualified for the World Cup on four occasions, including last year in Brazil, but has never advanced from the group stage.
